Uxbridge has a Board of Selectmen and town meeting form of government, with officials listed in the top infobox: Local government 1) granted the first woman in America the right to vote, 2) voted down smallpox vaccine in 1775, and 3) defied the Massachusetts Secretary of State's office, by approving women jurors. The 2009 Board of Health, made Uxbridge the 3rd community in the US, to ban tobacco sales in pharmacies. County Government in Massachusetts is weak or has vestiges of the former system. Regional officials of state government hold county elected offices (see info box). Worcester County, Massachusetts Sheriff, Lewis Evangelidis oversees county corrections, parolee and court services. Worcester District is the regional judicial jurisdiction. The Uxbridge district court serves surrounding towns.

Famous quotes containing the word government:
“War ... should only be declared by the authority of the people, whose toils and treasures are to support its burdens, instead of the government which is to reap its fruits.”
—James Madison (17511836)
“I will never accept that I got a free ride. It wasnt free at all. My ancestors were brought here against their will. They were made to work and help build the country. I worked in the cotton fields from the age of seven. I worked in the laundry for twenty- three years. I worked for the national organization for nine years. I just retired from city government after twelve-and-a- half years.”
—Johnnie Tillmon (b. 1926)
“How does it become a man to behave toward this American government to-day? I answer, that he cannot without disgrace be associated with it. I cannot for an instant recognize that political organization as my government which is the slaves government also.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
