USS Sturtevant (DE-239) was an Edsall class destroyer escort built for the U.S. Navy during World War II. She served in the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, and provided destroyer escort protection against submarine and air attack for Navy vessels and convoys.
She was named in honor of Albert D. Sturtevant who was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously during World War I when he, a pilot, was shot down by an overwhelming force of German fighter planes.
Sturtevant (DE-239), a destroyer escort, was laid down on 15 July 1942 by the Brown Shipbuilding Co., at Houston, Texas; launched on 3 December 1942; sponsored by Mrs. William North Sturtevant; and commissioned on 16 June 1943, Lt. Comdr. Frederick W. Hawes in command.
