Rescuing Andrea Doria Survivors

While at sea in July 1956 she was ordered to the scene of the tragic collision of the liners SS Andrea Doria and SS Stockholm and rescued the captain and 76 of the Doria crew before she sank. Edward H. Allen continued her training duty until again placed out of commission in reserve 9 January 1958. On 1 July 1972 she was struck from the Navy list and, on 5 February 1974, she was sold for scrapping.

Famous quotes containing the words rescuing and/or survivors:

Thank you, my rescuer, if one can speak of rescuing where there is little danger.
    Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872)

I want to celebrate these elms which have been spared by the plague, these survivors of a once flourishing tribe commemorated by all the Elm Streets in America. But to celebrate them is to be silent about the people who sit and sleep underneath them, the homeless poor who are hauled away by the city like trash, except it has no place to dump them. To speak of one thing is to suppress another.
    Lisel Mueller (b. 1924)
