The ship sailed from Shooters Island, New York under command of Assistant P. A. Welker March 3, 1902 for Baltimore where minor alterations to machinery were made before her departure to the Gulf of Mexico on April 14, 1902 to survey Apalachicola Bay and entrance to St. Andrews Sound.
