Success
Although "Uptown Girl" was not as successful in the U.S. as "Tell Her About It," the first single released from An Innocent Man, the single was still a big hit for Joel. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts in the US, and #1 in the United Kingdom, staying at that position for 5 weeks; it was the second biggest selling single of 1983 in the United Kingdom behind only Culture Club's "Karma Chameleon", which Joel had knocked off the number one position on November 1, 1983. The song was the 19th biggest selling single of the 1980s in the United Kingdom, where it has sold over a million copies.
In 1988, Rolling Stone ranked "Uptown Girl" #99 on their list of the 100 most important singles of the period 1963-1988.

Famous quotes containing the word success:
“The white man regards the universe as a gigantic machine hurtling through time and space to its final destruction: individuals in it are but tiny organisms with private lives that lead to private deaths: personal power, success and fame are the absolute measures of values, the things to live for. This outlook on life divides the universe into a host of individual little entities which cannot help being in constant conflict thereby hastening the approach of the hour of their final destruction.”
—Policy statement, 1944, of the Youth League of the African National Congress. pt. 2, ch. 4, Fatima Meer, Higher than Hope (1988)
“He saw, he wishd, and to the prize aspird.
Resolvd to win, he meditates the way,
By force to ravish, or by fraud betray;
For when success a lovers toil attends,
Few ask, if fraud or force attaind his ends.”
—Alexander Pope (16881744)
“We mothers are learning to mark our mothering success by our daughters lengthening flight. When they need us, we are fiercely there. But we do not need them to need usor to become us.”
—Letty Cottin Pogrebin (20th century)
