Uphams Corner

Uphams Corner is a section of Dorchester, the largest neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The intersection of Dudley Street and Columbia Road is the heart of Uphams Corner, and one of Dorchester's main business districts. Uphams Corner is served by several bus lines and the MBTA's Fairmount Commuter Rail. Often, Uphams Corner is known as Columbia Square.

There is a very large Cape Verdean immigrant community in Uphams Corner; it is the largest concentration of Cape Verdean residents within Boston city limits. The district has several historical sites, including the Strand Theatre, the Columbia Square Barbonic Hall, and Dorchester North Burying Ground, which is the nation’s second oldest cemetery. Jones Hill and Edward Everett Square are often thought of as part of Uphams Corner, but they are separate areas.

Famous quotes containing the word corner:

I have never been able to accept the two great laws of humanity—that you’re always being suppressed if you’re inspired and always being pushed into the corner if you’re exceptional. I won’t be cornered and I won’t stay suppressed.
    Margaret Anderson (1886–1973)
