Arts

In Art, a reference is an item from which a work is based. This may include:

  • an existing artwork,
  • a reproduction (i.e., photo),
  • directly observed object (i.e., person), or
  • the artist's memory.

Another example of reference is samples of various musical works being incorporated into a new one.

Famous quotes containing the word arts:

I haven’t seen so much tippy-toeing around since the last time I went to the ballet. When members of the arts community were asked this week about one of their biggest benefactors, Philip Morris, and its requests that they lobby the New York City Council on the company’s behalf, the pas de deux of self- justification was so painstakingly choreographed that it constituted a performance all by itself.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)

These arts open great gates of a future, promising to make the world plastic and to lift human life out of its beggary to a god- like ease and power.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
