Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti - February 2011 Christchurch Earthquake

February 2011 Christchurch Earthquake

Students, staff and visitors were present in the Unlimited buildings during the 6.3 magnitude earthquake on 22 February 2011. The school was evacuated to Latimer Square and CPIT, with the Latimer Square group then moving to CPIT. It is publicly unknown about the fate of The Crossing Basement, but Northern Tower was green-stickered and Southern Star, which was reportedly extensively damaged, especially on the second floor, was yellow-stickered. In a meeting held at Burnside High School, it was announced by John Mather that the school's Board of Trustees made it clear to the community that Unlimited will not be returning to the current buildings which are leased in the Central City. Instead, it was announced the school will potentially build new buildings, relying on whether the Ministry of Education agrees to terminate the lease agreements. The school has been relocated to the Halswell Residential College campus in Aidanfield, where the closely associated Discovery 1 School also found a new base. Northern Tower (above the Hallensteins Building) has since been demolished and demolition on Southern Star House imminent.

In January 2013, Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti will relocate to the premises of the former Christchurch Teachers' College in Parkstone Avenue, Ilam, which is now part of the University of Canterbury, whilst Discovery 1 will remain in Aidanfield. The Ministry of Education has proposed to merge Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti and Discovery 1. The school hopes to be back in the central city by 2015.

Famous quotes containing the word earthquake:

It is crystal clear to me that if Arabs put down a draft resolution blaming Israel for the recent earthquake in Iran it would probably have a majority, the U.S. would veto it and Britain and France would abstain.
