University of Waterloo Faculty of Science - Student Life

Student Life

There are several different student-run societies inside of the Faculty of Science, including the PhysClub, ChemClub, Biology Undergraduate Society, Biochemistry Survival Club, Science and Business Students Association, WatROX, and the overall SciSoc. Due to the wide range of departments in the faculty, the societies are based out of the many different buildings that are part of the Faculty of Science.

The SciSoc's C&D (coffee and donuts) shop is currently run out of Biology 1 building, under "The Link"; the indoor bridge connecting the Biology buildings with the Earth Science Building.

The mascot for the faculty of Science is Arriba the Amoeba. Arriba is typically referred to as "she" in the third person, despite the fact actual amoebas are not gendered. Arriba is both the mascot for the faculty itself and the student-run Science Society (Unlike the Faculty of Math and the Math Society, which have separate mascots.)

I heard a Californian student in Heidelberg say, in one of his calmest moods, that he would rather decline two drinks than one German adjective.

Gradually we come to admit that Shakespeare understands a greater extent and variety of human life than Dante; but that Dante understands deeper degrees of degradation and higher degrees of exaltation.
