Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology

The Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology is divided into Institute of Physiology and Institute of Pathophysiology.

In addition to providing undergraduate teaching, the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology carries out scientific research and produces expert reports. The Department is primarily responsible for the Bachelor degree Nutritional Therapist, which trains professionals in the field of preventive nutrition and specific nursing care.

The Department also provides courses in medical physiology and pathological physiology for the General Medicine programme. Department staff teach physiology and pathological physiology for all Bachelor degree courses accredited by the Medical Faculty. Additionally, the Department provides specialized courses in Occupational Physiology and Ergonomics, Special Investigative Methods in Occupational Physiology, Civilization Diseases and Nutritional Physiology for Bachelor’s and Master’s level courses.

Practical training takes place in a laboratory equipped with PowerLab by AD Instruments. This software allows small groups of students to monitor the function of each body system, carrying out a wide range of experiments to gain a greater understanding of the functions of the cardiovascular, respiratory, muscular, sensory and nervous systems. More information about the PowerLab laboratory is available here.

For Occupational Physiology and Ergonomics the Department is equipped with a laboratory for anthropometric measurements, energy expenditure, functional testing of the cardiopulmonary system and heat stress, and physical activity examination using integrated electromyography. The device is used for teaching and research work as well as in the field of sports medicine.

Research and publishing activities are focused on two key areas:

Metabolism of fat and bone tissue in relation to obesity Monitoring the response of the organism to heat and cold load under experimental conditions in a climatic chamber

Famous quotes containing the words department of, department and/or physiology:

... the Department of Justice is committed to asking one central question of everything we do: What is the right thing to do? Now that can produce debate, and I want it to be spirited debate. I want the lawyers of America to be able to call me and tell me: Janet, have you lost your mind?
    Janet Wood Reno (b. 1938)

“Which is more important to you, your field or your children?” the department head asked. She replied, “That’s like asking me if I could walk better if you amputated my right leg or my left leg.”
—Anonymous Parent. As quoted in Women and the Work Family Dilemma, by Deborah J. Swiss and Judith P. Walker, ch. 2 (1993)

A physician’s physiology has much the same relation to his power of healing as a cleric’s divinity has to his power of influencing conduct.
    Samuel Butler (1835–1902)
