Department of Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy provides teaching in the following fields: Philosophy, a three-year Bachelor degree programme of Philosophy, for on-site (full-time) students and in combined (part-distance) form, Philosophy, a two-year Master's degree graduate programme of Philosophy for on-site students, Basics of Social Sciences, a five-year Master's degree programme, a part of the Teaching for Secondary Schools programme (which will be provided for two more years), on-site Basics of Social Sciences, a two-year Master's degree graduate programme, a part of the Teaching for Secondary Schools programme (the programme is prepared for accreditation in combined form), Basics of Social Sciences, a major/minor type two-year Master's degree graduate programme, a part of the Teaching for Secondary Schools programme, on-site (combined form prepared for accreditation), Public Sector Management, a three-year Bachelor degree programme, a part of the Humanities Studies programme, on-site (to be transformed into Management in the Non-profit Sector on re-accreditation, on-site and combined form). Apart from these fields of study, the Department of Philosophy also provides teaching of social science disciplines (philosophy, ethics, logic, sociology, economics, political science, Bible studies, Jewish studies, religious studies) for all faculties of the University of Ostrava.
The Philosophy Department staff represent a wide range of research interests and activities. Members of the Department specialize in various stages of the development of philosophy (Ancient philosophy, the Middle Ages, the Modern era, contemporary and postmodern philosophy), also carrying out research in various philosophical disciplines (metaphysics, logic, aesthetics, sociology, political science, religious studies, philosophy of nature, philosophy of history) and investigating various aspects and problems of philosophy (ethics of medicine, feminism, applied ethics, interpretation of art, Bible studies, philosophy of language). Other members of the Department focus on applied research or the practical implications of philosophy in analyzing problems of the region, minorities, multiculturalism, equality, justice, dialogue (ethnography, cultural anthropology) and current issues of civil society, local democracy and charities.
