The University of Greenland (Kalaallisut: Ilisimatusarfik; Danish: Grønlands Universitet) is Greenland's only university. It is located in the capital city of Nuuk. Most courses are taught in Danish and a few in Greenlandic.
The university had an enrollment of approximately 150 students in 2007, almost all local inhabitants. It has around fourteen academic staff and five technical-administrative employees. The modest student population is due in part to the government's policy allowing students a free university education anywhere in Europe or North America, with most Greenlandic students going to school in Denmark.

“The great problem of American life [is] the riddle of authority: the difficulty of finding a way, within a liberal and individualistic social order, of living in harmonious and consecrated submission to something larger than oneself.... A yearning for self-transcendence and submission to authority [is] as deeply rooted as the lure of individual liberation.”
—Wilfred M. McClay, educator, author. The Masterless: Self and Society in Modern America, p. 4, University of North Carolina Press (1994)
“In bourgeois society, the French and the industrial revolution transformed the authorization of political space. The political revolution put an end to the formalized hierarchy of the ancien regimĂ©.... Concurrently, the industrial revolution subverted the social hierarchy upon which the old political space was based. It transformed the experience of society from one of vertical hierarchy to one of horizontal class stratification.”
—Donald M. Lowe, U.S. historian, educator. History of Bourgeois Perception, ch. 4, University of Chicago Press (1982)
“I was the toast of two continents: Greenland and Australia.”
