University of Derby Students' Union - Previous Operations

Previous Operations

The Students' Union previously owned and operated a number of student venues in Derby. The Union's city centre venues were in desperate need of refurbishment. There was a £400,000 maintenance backlog on the buildings, all the old bar equipment and pumps needed replacing, for instance. If the union had continued to occupy the building they would have had to have done that maintenance work. Taking this into account the decision was made to close The Late Bar pub, Union One and Union Two clubs. As well as these venues there was previously a bar located at the University's Lonsdale Hall halls of residence. With the closure of these locations, the Academy Bar is the only Students' Union owned entertainments venue.

Prior to the opening of the Academy Bar, the Students' Union operated a bar called The Union Arms at the Kedleston Road Campus, whist the Richardson Hall (location of the new Academy bar) was used for concerts and events.

Famous quotes containing the words previous and/or operations:

New York has never learnt the art of growing old by playing on all its pasts. Its present invents itself, from hour to hour, in the act of throwing away its previous accomplishments and challenging the future. A city composed of paroxysmal places in monumental reliefs.
    Michel de Certeau (1925–1986)

A sociosphere of contact, control, persuasion and dissuasion, of exhibitions of inhibitions in massive or homeopathic doses...: this is obscenity. All structures turned inside out and exhibited, all operations rendered visible. In America this goes all the way from the bewildering network of aerial telephone and electric wires ... to the concrete multiplication of all the bodily functions in the home, the litany of ingredients on the tiniest can of food, the exhibition of income or IQ.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)
