Universal Language (Booker T Album)

Universal Language is a 1977 album by southern soul band Booker T. & the MGs. The album was recorded for Asylum Records, following the demise of Stax Records, of which the MG's were an integral element, in 1975.

MG's drummer Al Jackson, Jr. was murdered in 1975; the remaining members recruited Willie Hall to replace him on this album. The group would not record another album for seventeen years, returning in 1994 with That's the Way It Should Be.

Famous quotes containing the words universal and/or language:

We have had many harbingers and forerunners; but of a purely spiritual life, history has afforded no example. I mean we have yet no man who has leaned entirely on his character, and eaten angels’ food; who, trusting to his sentiments, found life made of miracles; who, working for universal aims, found himself fed, he knew not how; clothed, sheltered, and weaponed, he knew not how, and yet it was done by his own hands.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Syntax and vocabulary are overwhelming constraints—the rules that run us. Language is using us to talk—we think we’re using the language, but language is doing the thinking, we’re its slavish agents.
    Harry Mathews (b. 1930)
