United Mizo Freedom Organisation

United Mizo Freedom Organisation, a political party in the Lushai Hills (today the Indian state of Mizoram). UMFO was founded on April 9, 1946. At the time of Indian independence, UMFO was the second largest political force in the area.

UMFO demanded the unification of the Lushai Hills with Burma.

In the 1951 Assam (which the Lushai Hills at that time was part of) state assembly elections, UMFO put up three candidates. None was elected. In total the party received 9070 votes (23,76% of the votes in those three constituencies).

In 1955 UMFO merged with the Eastern Indian Tribal Union.

Famous quotes containing the words united, freedom and/or organisation:

I hate to do what everybody else is doing. Why, only last week, on Fifth Avenue and some cross streets, I noticed that every feminine citizen of these United States wore an artificial posy on her coat or gown. I came home and ripped off every one of the really lovely refrigerator blossoms that were sewn on my own bodices.
    Carolyn Wells (1862–1942)

The way leads to freedom, to freedom it goes. The old world must crumble. Awake, wind of dawn!
    Alfred Döblin (1878–1957)

It is because the body is a machine that education is possible. Education is the formation of habits, a superinducing of an artificial organisation upon the natural organisation of the body.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–1895)
