Union City (BART Station) - Union City Intermodal Rail Station

Union City Intermodal Rail Station

Currently, no connection to other regional trains exists at Union City BART station. In February 2008, Union City's Economic Development Department and BART have proposed that this station become a regional rail intermodal station. The intermodal station would serve BART trains, Capitol Corridor intercity trains, and Caltrain commuter rail service to the Peninsula via a new rail bridge located near the Dumbarton Bridge. For now, the Dumbarton Express bus service provides such service to the Peninsula, operating between Union City and Palo Alto.

In May 2011, developers, Union City and BART officials broke ground on the first residential housing project inside the city/transit agency-specified redevelopment district. By October, the Avalon Apartment building has been completed and rented out, bus-only lanes in front of the station are complete, the station now has a beautiful tree-lined main promenade and many condominium housing units have been completed on the east side of the BART tracks and sold. The BART station building facade has enjoyed a completely renovated and overhauled facelift which lends it an airy feeling similar to SFO station.

In May 2012, a new Central Accessway in front of station opened to bus and vehicular traffic, and a new passenger drop-off and taxi stand on the North Busway became operational. The East Plaza, currently under construction, will house either a public library or a fine arts facility.

Phase 2 of the station's Intermodal Station District will add an eastern entrance and a pedestrian walkway to allow direct access to BART for residents in the new housing developments along 11th Street. This new construction will break ground in late 2012 and will take about 18 months to complete. The new entrance will include a new Station agent booth, two new elevator platforms, and new fare gates and fare collection machines.

Famous quotes containing the words union, city, rail and/or station:

    To emancipate [the slaves] entirely throughout the Union cannot, I conceive, be thought of, consistently with the safety of the country.
    Frances Trollope (1780–1863)

    The city mouse eats bread and cheese;—
    The garden mouse eats what he can;
    We will not grudge him seeds and stocks,
    Poor little timid furry man.
    Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830–1894)

    For this is the mark of a wise and upright man, not to rail against the gods in misfortune.
    Aeschylus (525–456 B.C.)

    It was evident that the same foolish respect was not here claimed for mere wealth and station that is in many parts of New England; yet some of them were the “first people,” as they are called, of the various towns through which we passed.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
