Ultimate Fantastic Four - Continuity Problems

Continuity Problems

Ultimate Fantastic Four is considered the source of several continuity problems within the Ultimate Marvel Universe.

The first problem revolves around when the team was founded and their ages. The Fantastic Four, as well as the "Reed Richards Science Center," are mentioned in early issues of Ultimate Spider-Man as well as the Ultimate Spider-Man video game, establishing that the team already existed. In The Ultimates series, it is also clearly stated by Nick Fury that the Fantastic Four were already in existence before the Ultimates roster was completed. This was contradicted in Ultimate Fantastic Four #5 when it is suggested that The Ultimates were already in existence before the "The Fantastic Four" officially went public. Writer Mark Millar, who wrote the plot, claims that he did not intend this to happen and blamed Brian Michael Bendis, who handled the dialogue chores, for the error. Additionally, the Ultimate Spider-Man Super Special, published approximately two years before the first issue of Ultimate Fantastic Four, features an appearance by the Fantastic Four who are written and drawn to appear older and almost identical to their established Earth-616 counterparts. Bendis did state that the appearance of this older version of the team would eventually be explained although this explanation has yet to be seen.

In response to confusion surrounding the team's earlier appearance in Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #9, Brian Michael Bendis has stated that the story was intentionally written to be non-canonical, as it features Spider-Man and a group of Skrulls going on a rampage through the Marvel Comics offices.

There are also inconsistencies concerning the appearance of Ultimate Doctor Doom and Latveria in Ultimate Marvel Team-Up. Latveria does exist within the universe but, although it is a dictatorship, it is not ruled by Doctor Doom. Despite this detail, Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #14, published well before his introduction in Ultimate Fantastic Four, features a painting of Doctor Doom on the wall of the Latverian Embassy.

Famous quotes containing the words continuity and/or problems:

Every generation rewrites the past. In easy times history is more or less of an ornamental art, but in times of danger we are driven to the written record by a pressing need to find answers to the riddles of today.... In times of change and danger when there is a quicksand of fear under men’s reasoning, a sense of continuity with generations gone before can stretch like a lifeline across the scary present and get us past that idiot delusion of the exceptional Now that blocks good thinking.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)

I conceive that the leading characteristic of the nineteenth century has been the rapid growth of the scientific spirit, the consequent application of scientific methods of investigation to all the problems with which the human mind is occupied, and the correlative rejection of traditional beliefs which have proved their incompetence to bear such investigation.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)
