The University Athletic Association of the Philippines holds its basketball tournaments from July to October of a calendar year.

The tournament is divided into two divisions, the Seniors' division, which is further divided into the Men's tournament, for male collegiate players, and the Women's tournament for female collegiate players; the other division is the Juniors' for male high school players.

As of the 2005-06 season, all eight universities send their varsity teams to the Men's, Women's, and Juniors tournaments.

The UAAP basketball sport has a rich history of schools establishing dynasties. Ateneo currently has a 5 year winning streak. UE won a record seven consecutive basketball titles from 1965-1971 albeit the third one shared with UST.UST also won six(6) straight championships from 1939-40 to 1949-50. Tournaments were not held from 1941 to 1945 because of world war II, a case of "force majeure", therefore the 1946 uaap tournament should be considered a direct continuation of the 1939-40 season since the post war uaap is the same uaap before the war started. Hence, rightfully and justifiably, UST is considered officially to have won six straight basketball championships, the second longest championship streak in UAAP basketball history. Two other schools ended their championship streak at (4) four: UST won it from 1993-1996. La Salle won from 1998-2001.

The champion teams of the 2012-13 season are the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the men's division, the FEU Lady Tamaraws in the women's division and the FEU Baby Tamaraws in the juniors' division.

Famous quotes containing the word basketball:

Perhaps basketball and poetry have just a few things in common, but the most important is the possibility of transcendence. The opposite is labor. In writing, every writer knows when he or she is laboring to achieve an effect. You want to get from here to there, but find yourself willing it, forcing it. The equivalent in basketball is aiming your shot, a kind of strained and usually ineffective purposefulness. What you want is to be in some kind of flow, each next moment a discovery.
    Stephen Dunn (b. 1939)
