The Tyree Scott Freedom School is a nine-day summer educational program in Seattle, Washington for people aged 15–21, designed to expose them to social justice issues, and teach anti-racist community-organizing skills. Students are able to learn about the history of community organizing in Seattle. The project also facilitates a monthly gathering of anti-racist educators, whose goal is to end institutional racism in the education system.
Famous quotes containing the words scott, freedom and/or school:
“No decent career was ever founded on a public.”
—F. Scott Fitzgerald (18961940)
“Man cannot be free if he does not know that he is subject to necessity, because his freedom is always won in his never wholly successful attempts to liberate himself from necessity.”
—Hannah Arendt (19061975)
“Im not making light of prayers here, but of so-called school prayer, which bears as much resemblance to real spiritual experience as that freeze-dried astronaut food bears to a nice standing rib roast. From what I remember of praying in school, it was almost an insult to God, a rote exercise in moving your mouth while daydreaming or checking out the cutest boy in the seventh grade that was a far, far cry from soul-searching.”
—Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
