The University of Alabama is the dominant institution of higher learning and is the largest university in the state of Alabama in terms of enrollment. Enrolling approximately 33,602 students on an 1,800 acres (7.3 km2) campus, UA has been a part of Tuscaloosa's identity since it opened its doors in 1831.
