Tunghai University (zh-tw: 東海大學, Pe̍h-oē-jī: Tang-hái Tāi-ha̍k) was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1955 as a comprehensive university. Moreover, Tunghai University was founded as the first private university making it the second oldest university in Taiwan, which earned the school its fame and reputation. The university is located on the western side of Taichung, Taiwan, an urbanized area. On the grounds, Luce Memorial Chapel (designed by noted architect I. M. Pei) is a local landmark. The logo of the university contains the cross in reference to the statement in the founding documents that it was "founded in the love of Jesus," and the three linked circles refer to the Holy Trinity as well as the motto, "Truth, Faith, Deeds."

Famous quotes containing the word university:
“Television ... helps blur the distinction between framed and unframed reality. Whereas going to the movies necessarily entails leaving ones ordinary surroundings, soap operas are in fact spatially inseparable from the rest of ones life. In homes where television is on most of the time, they are also temporally integrated into ones real life and, unlike the experience of going out in the evening to see a show, may not even interrupt its regular flow.”
