Tung Wah Coffin Home - Function of Coffin Home

Function of Coffin Home

From the 19th century to the early 20th century, many Chinese people traveled to other countries such as North and South American, or South East Asian countries in search of jobs and better opportunities.

Many traditional Chinese individuals hoped to be buried in their birthplaces after their deaths. This was made possible by the facilities and services offered by the Coffin Home even if the dead bodies were overseas. As Hong Kong was located at a favorable transportation position, it soon became the central spot for people to travel back to their homeland from other countries.

At that time, it was very common for people to ask for help from Tung Wah Coffin Home, where the Coffin Home would transport the dead bodies back to their birthplaces for proper burial. Temporary depository of coffin was also made available when the bereaved wished to look for a better burial place for the dead.

Famous quotes containing the words function of, function, coffin and/or home:

    It is the function of vice to keep virtue within reasonable bounds.
    Samuel Butler (1835–1902)

    Advocating the mere tolerance of difference between women is the grossest reformism. It is a total denial of the creative function of difference in our lives. Difference must be not merely tolerated, but seen as a fund of necessary polarities between which our creativity can spark like a dialectic.
    Audre Lorde (1934–1992)

    Bear with me;
    My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,
    And I must pause till it come back to me.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    From the mountains to the prairies,
    To the oceans white with foam,
    God bless America,
    My home sweet home!
    Irving Berlin (1888–1989)
