Calculation of Strength
For a tube of silicone rubber with a tensile strength of 10 MPa and a 8 mm outer diameter and 2 mm thick walls. The maximum pressure may be calculated as follows:
- Outer diameter = 0.008
- Wall thickness = 0.002
- Tensile strength = 10 * 1000000
- Pressure burst = (Tensile strength * Wall thickness * 2 / (10 * Outer diameter) ) * 10
Gives burst pressure of 5 MPa.
Using a safety factor:
- Pressure max = (Tensile strength * Wall thickness * 2 / (10 * Outer diameter) ) * 10 / Safety_factor

“To my thinking boomed the Professor, begging the question as usual, the greatest triumph of the human mind was the calculation of Neptune from the observed vagaries of the orbit of Uranus.
And yours, said the P.B.”
—Samuel Beckett (19061989)

“Curse of the orchard,
Blemish on the lands fair countenance,
I have grown strong for strength denied, for struggle
In hostile woods. I keep alive by being the troublesome,
Indestructible
Stinkweed of truth.”
—Naomi Long Madgett (b. 1923)
