The municipality Trikala was formed at the 2011 local government reform by the merger of the following 8 former municipalities, that became municipal units:
- Estiaiotida
- Faloreia
- Kallidendro
- Koziakas
- Megala Kalyvia
- Paliokastro
- Paralithaioi
- Trikala
