History

The 70-acre (280,000 m2) site itself formerly was a convent school for the local community which was bought in 1998 by Falmouth College of Arts, as it was then known. The Universities of Exeter and Plymouth both expressed an interest in the project. The University of Plymouth later withdrew (although it remains a partner in CUC), leaving University of Exeter in partnership with Falmouth College of Arts: the site is held on a 125-year lease. This decision was probably made easier by the fact that Exeter had taken partial responsibility for the running of Camborne School of Mines in 1993.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Every generation rewrites the past. In easy times history is more or less of an ornamental art, but in times of danger we are driven to the written record by a pressing need to find answers to the riddles of today.... In times of change and danger when there is a quicksand of fear under men’s reasoning, a sense of continuity with generations gone before can stretch like a lifeline across the scary present and get us past that idiot delusion of the exceptional Now that blocks good thinking.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)

The history of literature—take the net result of Tiraboshi, Warton, or Schlegel,—is a sum of a very few ideas, and of very few original tales,—all the rest being variation of these.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

The awareness that health is dependent upon habits that we control makes us the first generation in history that to a large extent determines its own destiny.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
