Transport in London - Metro and Light Rail

Metro and Light Rail

Transport for London operates three railway systems which are not part of the national railway network. The largest is the London Underground, operating on sub surface and so called "tube" lines. The 2nd largest is an inner suburban rail network called London Overground using mainly surface lines in inner suburban London and the smallest is the automated Docklands Light Railway operating in central, east and southeast London. Transport for London also operates the Tramlink system, centred on Croydon. Like the road network, a flaw in London's under- and over-ground railways is that they radiate out to the suburbs from the centre. Whilst obviously necessary given the huge volume of commuters, it means that travelling between parts of London which are not on the same commuter-route can be slow. This problem would be reduced by the introduction of Tramlink and other proposed railway projects such as Crossrail

Famous quotes containing the words light and/or rail:

Libraries are reservoirs of strength, grace and wit, reminders of order, calm and continuity, lakes of mental energy, neither warm nor cold, light nor dark. The pleasure they give is steady, unorgastic, reliable, deep and long-lasting. In any library in the world, I am at home, unselfconscious, still and absorbed.
    Germaine Greer (b. 1939)

If goodness were only a theory, it were a pity it should be lost to the world. There are a number of things, the idea of which is a clear gain to the mind. Let people, for instance, rail at friendship, genius, freedom, as long as they will—the very names of these despised qualities are better than anything else that could be substituted for them, and embalm even the most envenomed satire against them.
    William Hazlitt (1778–1830)
