Transport in Bristol - National and International Connections

National and International Connections

The city is connected by road on an east-west axis from London to Wales by the M4 motorway, and on a north-southwest axis from Birmingham to Exeter by the M5 motorway. Also within the county is the M49 motorway, a shortcut between the M5 in the south and M4 Severn Crossing in the west.

There are two principal railway stations in Bristol they are Bristol Parkway and Bristol Temple Meads. There are also scheduled coach links to most major UK cities.

The city is also served by its own airport, Bristol Airport (BRS), at Lulsgate, which has seen substantial improvements to its runway, terminal and other facilities. The airport offers services to major European destinations, but the service to Newark Airport near New York City was withdrawn in November 2010.

Famous quotes containing the words national and, national and/or connections:

    Just so before we’re international,
We’re national and act as nationals.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

In our brief national history we have shot four of our presidents, worried five of them to death, impeached one and hounded another out of office. And when all else fails, we hold an election and assassinate their character.
    —P.J. (Patrick Jake)

Growing up human is uniquely a matter of social relations rather than biology. What we learn from connections within the family takes the place of instincts that program the behavior of animals; which raises the question, how good are these connections?
    Elizabeth Janeway (b. 1913)
