In Pakistan, Karachi was the first and only city where trams were introduced in 1885 by the British Colonists. After almost 90 years, in 1975, the network was closed as trams were involved in many accidents and due to traffic congestion in the city. However, a tram system is planned for construction in Gwadar, construction started in late 2011.
