Since May 2010, Toyota Motor Company and Tesla Motors have worked together to develop the second generation RAV4 EV using Tesla's electric motor and batteries and Toyota's platform and body. The electric SUV was developed by Tesla and Toyota Technical Center U.S.A. in Michigan. The RAV4 EV will be assembled in 2012 at Toyota's facility in Woodstock, Ontario along with the regular gasoline version. Tesla is building the electric powertrain at its plant at Tesla Factory in Fremont, California, and then ship them to Canada.
The RAV4 EV was released in September 2012 starting at a price of US$49,800 before any government incentives. Toyota also offers a 36-month lease option at US$599 per month with down payment of US$3,499. The RAV4 EV is sold only in California, beginning with the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles/Orange County and San Diego. Production will be limited to 2,600 during the first three years. The RAV4 EV is available to individual consumers and fleet customers. Due to the capacity of its battery pack the RAV4 EV qualifies for the maximum US$7,500 federal tax credit and also eligible for a US$2,500 rebate in California. A total of 108 RAV4 EVs have been sold through October 2012.
