Famous quotes containing the words james, cook and/or university:

The sway of alcohol over mankind is unquestionably due to its power to stimulate the mystical faculties of human nature, usually crushed to earth by the cold facts and dry criticisms of the sober hour. Sobriety diminishes, discriminates, and says no; drunkenness expands, unites, and says yes.
    —William James (1842–1910)

‘Oh, I am a cook and a captain bold,
And the mate of the Nancybrig,
    And a bos’sun tight, and a midshipmite,
And the crew of the captain’s gig!”’
    Sir William Schwenck Gilbert (1836–1911)

The university must be retrospective. The gale that gives direction to the vanes on all its towers blows out of antiquity.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
