Subspecies
Four subspecies exist:
- C. t. townsendii - Townsend's big-eared bat
- C. t. ingens - Ozark big-eared bat (federally endangered)
- C. t. pallescens - western big-eared bat
- C. t. virginianus - Virginia big-eared bat (federally endangered), the Virginia state bat
