Touchwood - History

History

Opened in 2001 and costing £110 million to build, the centre was built on the former car parks behind the High Street.

Around 251,000 cubic metres of earth were excavated to form the basements and over 4,000 tons of support the Touchwood structure.

Touchwood has the only John Lewis department store in the West Midlands, at 265,000 sq ft (24,600 m2), as well as 80 other stores, over 20 restaurants and a Cineworld nine-screen multiplex cinema.

The Touchwood access also leads to Library Square, for the Solihull Central Library and Arts Complex.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The steps toward the emancipation of women are first intellectual, then industrial, lastly legal and political. Great strides in the first two of these stages already have been made of millions of women who do not yet perceive that it is surely carrying them towards the last.
Ellen Battelle Dietrick, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 13, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)

The principle office of history I take to be this: to prevent virtuous actions from being forgotten, and that evil words and deeds should fear an infamous reputation with posterity.
    Tacitus (c. 55–117)

In all history no class has been enfranchised without some selfish motive underlying. If to-day we could prove to Republicans or Democrats that every woman would vote for their party, we should be enfranchised.
    Carrie Chapman Catt (1859–1947)
