Toronto Subway and RT - Rolling Stock

Rolling Stock

The TTC has a fleet of 678 subway cars of various ages. The oldest cars in the fleet are the H-series (H5s and H6s) cars, many of which were built over 30 years ago and are scheduled to be gradually retired upon delivery of the new Toronto Rocket trains. The Rockets had been scheduled to come into service in late 2010, but were delayed until July 21, 2011. The final H4 subway cars were retired on January 27, 2012.

All Toronto subway cars were manufactured by Bombardier Transportation or one of its predecessors (Montreal Locomotive Works, Hawker Siddeley, and UTDC), except the TTC's original G-series cars, which were manufactured by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company. All cars starting with the Hawker Siddeley H-series in 1965 have been built in Bombardier's Thunder Bay, Ontario plant.

The Scarborough RT fleet consists of 28 ICTS Mark I vehicles built by UTDC in Millhaven, Ontario similar in design to those found on the Vancouver SkyTrain. The Mark Is are the original vehicles of the SRT and have been in service for over 25 years. The line will close in 2015 to be retrofitted and incorporated into the Eglinton–Scarborough Crosstown line which is expected to open in 2020. The new line will utilize light rail vehicles which can be coupled to form trains.
