Toronto Internet Exchange - Architecture

Architecture

The Exchange is Ethernet-based and currently operates 3 chassis-based switches, two Cisco 7600 series and a Cisco 7010 series (Operationalized April 2011). Peers connect to the Layer 2 fabric, and use IPv4 & IPv6 addresses provided by TorIX to connect with each other, utilizing the BGP routing protocol. Port speeds of 1000LX (GigabitEthernet) and 10GE are available, including in bonded configurations. Single-mode fiber is required, and peers can connect from anywhere in the building via the meet-me-room.

If and when the Exchange expands beyond its current physical location, it will likely choose an architecture model which permits geographically connected Exchange participants to peer with each other. For technical reasons, this model is not always chosen in such circumstances, however TorIX has the resources to accomplish that successfully.

Famous quotes containing the word architecture:

For it is not metres, but a metre-making argument, that makes a poem,—a thought so passionate and alive, that, like the spirit of a plant or an animal, it has an architecture of its own, and adorns nature with a new thing.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Poetry is not only dream and vision; it is the skeleton architecture of our lives. It lays the foundations for a future of change, a bridge across our fears of what has never been before.
    Audre Lorde (1934–1992)

In short, the building becomes a theatrical demonstration of its functional ideal. In this romanticism, High-Tech architecture is, of course, no different in spirit—if totally different in form—from all the romantic architecture of the past.
    Dan Cruickshank (b. 1949)
