The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra (東京フィルハーモニー交響楽団, Tōkyō Firuhāmonī Kōkyō Gakudan?) claims to be the oldest classical orchestra in Japan, having been founded in Nagoya in 1911. It moved to Tokyo in 1938 and has some 166 members as of 2005.
The orchestra plays at Orchard Hall, part of the Bunkamura (文化村) shopping and entertainment complex in Shibuya, Tokyo.

Famous quotes containing the words tokyo and/or orchestra:
“Eclecticism is the degree zero of contemporary general culture: one listens to reggae, watches a western, eats McDonalds food for lunch and local cuisine for dinner, wears Paris perfume in Tokyo and retro clothes in Hong Kong; knowledge is a matter for TV games. It is easy to find a public for eclectic works.”
—Jean François Lyotard (b. 1924)
“As the artist
extends his world with
one gratuitous flourisha stroke of white or
a run on the clarinet above the
bass tones of the orchestra ...”
—Denise Levertov (b. 1923)
