Etymological Origin
The word Tocuyo (TOO-QUY-YO) according to Fidel Betancourt Martinez, historian from Lara State, is of Caribbean origin and means: TOO: clarity, light, day, sun, sun, comet, Aerolite, Quy: many animals and ugly ( fireflies) and YO: fly. Other names of indigenous origin who have remained in the region are:
- In places: Sanare, Capadare, Marita, Mirimire, Chichiriviche, Tucacas, Chivare, Guacara, Tibana, Guacabana, Cuare, Bacchus, Tacarigua and Jatira.
- In Objects: Totuma, Tuta, Taturo, Topi, tuna, hammock.
- In plants: Mapungo, Taquara, semeruco, guatacare, barisigua, Teco, Tuna and Jobo
