Titular See - Orthodox Church

Orthodox Church

The granting of titular sees is occasionally practised in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

One reason is to avoid causing offense or confusion when an Orthodox bishop serves a place which is also the see of a bishop of a different denomination: the Orthodox bishop in Oxford, England, is titled Bishop of Diokleia; the Russian Orthodox diocese of the United Kingdom is the Diocese of Sourozh.

Famous quotes containing the words orthodox and/or church:

The gloomy theology of the orthodox—the Calvinists—I do not, I cannot believe. Many of the notions—nay, most of the notions—which orthodox people have of the divinity of the Bible, I disbelieve. I am so nearly infidel in all my views, that too, in spite of my wishes, that none but the most liberal doctrines can command my assent.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

Is it possible that I am not alone in believing that in the dispute between Galileo and the Church, the Church was right and the centre of man’s universe is the earth?
    Stephen Vizinczey (b. 1933)
