Tin Mine Falls - Height

Height

The height of Tin Mine falls is a matter of some controversy, due to two factors:

  • uncertainty in the precise definition of a waterfall and where it begins and ends
  • the lack of photographs and other material to documenting Tin Mine Falls

A number of sources list the height of Tin Mine Falls as 459m (1,381') or 360m (1080'), and quote a story concerning the origin of this figure: "The falls were apparently measured in 1990 by a Dr. John Pease ... using a plumb line"

If true, this height would make Tin Mine Falls the tallest waterfall in Australia and 137th tallest in the world. However, it conflicts with official data from Geosciences Australia, who list the most Significant Waterfalls in Australia as:

  • Wallaman Falls - Queensland, 305m
  • Wollomombi Waterfall - New South Wales, 220m (100m single drop)
  • Ellenborough Falls - New South Wales 160m (single drop)

Note the distinction between longest-single-drop height and overall height - many observers will only include vertical plunges when assessing the height of a waterfall.

Famous quotes containing the word height:

To achieve harmony in bad taste is the height of elegance.
    Jean Genet (1910–1986)

To say more than human things with human voice,
That cannot be; to say human things with more
    Than human voice, that, also, cannot be;
To speak humanly from the height or from the depth
Of human things, that is acutest speech.
    Wallace Stevens (1879–1955)

We have not the motive to prepare ourselves for a “life-work” of teaching, of social work—we know that we would lay it down with hallelujah in the height of our success, to make a home for the right man. And all the time in the background of our consciousness rings the warning that perhaps the right man will never come. A great love is given to very few. Perhaps this make-shift time filler of a job is our life work after all.
    Ruth Benedict (1887–1948)
