Famous quotes containing the words united states, expansion, united and/or states:

... the yearly expenses of the existing religious system ... exceed in these United States twenty millions of dollars. Twenty millions! For teaching what? Things unseen and causes unknown!... Gail Sheehy (20th century)

The real charm of the United States is that it is the only comic country ever heard of.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)

If the Soviet Union can give up the Brezhnev Doctrine for the Sinatra Doctrine, the United States can give up the James Monroe Doctrine for the Marilyn Monroe Doctrine: Let’s all go to bed wearing the perfume we like best.
    Carlos Fuentes (b. 1928)
