Formal Example
A more formal proof of why system A & B from above differ is now presented. To perform this proof, the second definition will be used.
System A:
- Start with a delay of the input
- Now delay the output by
- Clearly, therefore the system is not time-invariant.
System B:
- Start with a delay of the input
- Now delay the output by
- Clearly, therefore the system is time-invariant. Although there are many other proofs, this is the easiest.

Famous quotes containing the word formal:
“That anger can be expressed through words and non-destructive activities; that promises are intended to be kept; that cleanliness and good eating habits are aspects of self-esteem; that compassion is an attribute to be prizedall these lessons are ones children can learn far more readily through the living example of their parents than they ever can through formal instruction.”
—Fred Rogers (20th century)
“The manifestation of poetry in external life is formal perfection. True sentiment grows within, and art must represent internal phenomena externally.”
