Since the Protestant Reformation, the largest religion in Thuringia has been Lutheranism. Under Communist rule, church membership was strongly discouraged and today over half of the population is religiously unaffiliated. As of 2009 the Evangelical Church in Germany remains the largest faith in the state, adhered to by 24.0% of the population. Members of the Catholic Church form 7.8%. 68.2% of the Thuringians are irreligious or adhere to other faiths.
