Rise of Packaging Waste
Between the start of New York City waste collections in 1905 and 2005 there was a tenfold rise in "product waste" (packaging and old products), from 92 to 1,242 pounds per person per year. Containers and packaging now represent 32 percent of all municipal solid waste. Non-durable goods (products used less than three years) are 27 percent, and durable goods are 16 percent.

Famous quotes containing the words rise and/or waste:
“Carry hate
In front of you and harmony behind.
Be deaf to music and to beauty blind.
Win war. Rise bloody, maybe not too late
For having first to civilize a space
Wherein to play your violin with grace.”
—Gwendolyn Brooks (b. 1917)
“My wife and I have asked a crowd of craps
To come and waste their time and ours: perhaps
Youd care to join us? In a pigs arse, friend.”
—Philip Larkin (19221986)
