Thornhill College - Debating

Debating

Thornhill College has a Senior Debating Society, established in 1954. The team reached final of the Northern Ireland Schools Debating Competition in 2004 and 2007, and is known throughout the school for wearing the gold stripe around the lapel of the debating blazer. Thornhill has had two teams in the semi-finals of this competition who debated against each other on 30 March 2007 in Belfast. The society meets regularly to debate topical subjects and research up and coming competitions. The school also has an established Junior Debating Society who meet every Tuesday after school as part of the homework club.

Famous quotes containing the word debating:

Scepticism, as I said, is not intellectual only; it is moral also; a chronic atrophy and disease of the whole soul. A man lives by believing something; not by debating and arguing about many things. A sad case for him when all that he can manage to believe is something he can button in his pocket, and with one or the other organ eat and digest! Lower than that he will not get.
    Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881)
