Personal Life and Death

In 1955, Tyra married Suzanne Jocelyn Sheldon (Northwestern BA-Music 1955, b.1933 d.1973) of Chico, California. Before divorcing in 1972, their union produced six children - born between 1957 and 1963. He was preceded in death by his wife from a later marriage, Judith Hastings (b. 1942 d.1987) of Manhattan, Kansas.

Following his retirement from the Crane School of Music in 1989, Tyra relocated to the Atlanta, Georgia area where he would spend his remaining years living nearby immediate family. He died on July 7, 1995 of complications arising from leukemia.
