Thomas R. Proctor High School - English Second Language Speakers

English Second Language Speakers

Furthermore, there is a large immigrant population around the area that adds a colorful demographic to this high school. Many ethnicities exist at Proctor. Over 40 languages are spoken in the school by students who immigrated from Thailand, Burma, Bosnia, Russia, Ukraine, and other lands. Therefore, having a strong English Second Language (ESL) program in this school is very important. Since so many students are immigrants, Proctor offers classes with special instruction for them. Many ESL students are taught by teachers who are trained specifically to instruct those students on how they may understand the material better and improve their English. Some students have never spoken English before they came to Proctor High School.

Famous quotes containing the words english, language and/or speakers:

“Mustn’t grumble” was the most English of expressions. English patience was mingled inertia and despair. What was the use? But Americans did nothing but grumble! Americans also boasted. “I do some pretty incredible things” was not an English expression. “I’m fairly keen” was not American. Americans were showoffs—it was part of our innocence—we often fell on our faces; the English seldom showed off, so they seldom looked like fools.
    Paul Theroux (b. 1941)

When a language creates—as it does—a community within the present, it does so only by courtesy of a community between the present and the past.
    Christopher Ricks (b. 1933)

All the great speakers were bad speakers at first. Stumping it through England for seven years made Cobden a consummate debater. Stumping it through New England for twice seven trained Wendell Phillips.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
