Third World Organization For Women in Science

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) is an international forum that awards fellowships in science to female postgraduate students from developing nations. Established in 1989, the organisation is based in Trieste, Italy at the headquarters for The World Academy of Sciences. Following the TWOWS Fourth General Assembly and International Conference in 2010, members voted to change the organisation's name from Third World Organization for Women in Science (TWOWS) to the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World.

Its former president, Lydia Makhubu, encouraged young girls to start at the earliest level — primary school — in order to be ready to embark on a career in science.

Famous quotes containing the words world, organization, women and/or science:

No man, however benevolent, liberal, and wise, can use a large fortune so that it will do half as much good in the world as it would if it were divided into moderate sums and in the hands of workmen who had earned it by industry and frugality. The piling up of estates often does great and conspicuous good.... But no man does with accumulated wealth so much good as the same amount would do in many hands.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

... every woman’s organization recognizes that reformers are far more common than feminists, that the passion to look after your fellow man, and especially woman, to do good to her in your way is far more common than the desire to put into every one’s hand the power to look after themselves.
    Crystal Eastman (1881–1928)

Most women are not so young as they are painted.
    Max Beerbohm (1872–1956)

We have not given science too big a place in our education, but we have made a perilous mistake in giving it too great a preponderance in method in every other branch of study.
    Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)
