Theatre Junction

Theatre Junction is a contemporary theatre company based in Calgary, Alberta.

Theatre Junction was founded in 1991 by Mark Lawes. In its original inception, Theatre Junction performed modern work as part of a classical, text based program. Their performances have included a wide array of works from many Canadian playwrights including, Judith Thompson, John Murrell, Dominic Champagne and Sharon Pollock.

Recently, the company has shifted its mandate and now maintains a resident company of artists from different disciplines who work together to create contemporary pieces. Alongside the work presented by their resident company of artists, the company also curates a season of contemporary work from local, national and international artists of varying disciplines.

Theatre Junction's 09/10 season includes theatre, dance and music from the world's leading performing artists, including Compagnie Marie Chouinard, William Yang, Meg Stuart and more.

In 2006, the Theatre Junction Society raised $12 million to purchase and restore The GRAND, a venue built in 1912, which operated as Calgary's original "culturehouse". Theatre Junction, operating out of The Grand, presents contemporary theatre, dance and music from a local, national and international perspective. The GRAND also functions as a rental space, allowing performers such as Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith, or internationally renowned choreographer Philippe Decoufle to present their work in this newly designed space.

Famous quotes containing the words theatre and/or junction:

Art is for [the Irish] inseparable from artifice: of that, the theatre is the home. Possibly, it was England made me a novelist.
    Elizabeth Bowen (1899–1973)

In order to get to East Russet you take the Vermont Central as far as Twitchell’s Falls and change there for Torpid River Junction, where a spur line takes you right into Gormley. At Gormley you are met by a buckboard which takes you back to Torpid River Junction again.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)
