Theatre in England - West End Theatre

The West End of London has a large number of theatres, particularly centred around Shaftesbury Avenue.

West End theatre is a popular term for mainstream professional theatre staged in the large theatres of London's "Theatreland". Along with New York's Broadway theatre, West End theatre is usually considered to represent the highest level of commercial theatre in the English-speaking world. Seeing a West End show is a common tourist activity in London.

A prolific composer of musical theatre in the 20th century, Andrew Lloyd Webber has been referred to as "the most commercially successful composer in history". His musicals have dominated the West End for a number of years and have travelled to Broadway in New York and around the world as well as being turned into films. Lloyd Webber's musicals originally starred Elaine Paige, who with continued success has become known as the First Lady of British Musical Theatre.

Famous quotes containing the words west and/or theatre:

You in the West have a problem. You are unsure when you are being lied to, when you are being tricked. We do not suffer from this; and unlike you, we have acquired the skill of reading between the lines.
    Zdenek Urbának (b. 1917)

A good drama critic is one who perceives what is happening in the theatre of his time. A great drama critic also perceives what is not happening.
    Kenneth Tynan (1927–1980)
