The World (internet Service Provider)
The World is an Internet service provider originally headquartered in Brookline, Massachusetts. It was the first dial-up service provider that offered direct access of the Internet to the general public, doing so since 1989. Prior to that time, Internet access had been strictly limited to academic and scientific researchers and to the military. Previous dial-up providers had only offered access to their own local BBS.
Many government and university installations blocked, threatened to block, or attempted to shut-down The World's Internet connection until Software Tool & Die was eventually granted permission by the National Science Foundation to provide public Internet access on "an experimental basis."

Famous quotes containing the words world and/or service:
“I know some of my self-worth comes from tennis, and its hard to think of doing something else where you know youll never be the best. Tennis players are rare creatures: where else in the world can you know that youre the best? The definitiveness of it is the beauty of it, but its not all there is to life and Im ready to explore the alternatives.”
—Martina Navratilova (b. 1956)
“Let the good service of well-deservers be never rewarded with loss. Let their thanks be such as may encourage more strivers for the like.”
—Elizabeth I (15331603)
