In 1978, Cleon and Vermin are in a gang called the Destroyers, lead by Virgil. Virgil sends Cleon and Vermin to drug deal with the Satan Mothers; however, the deal is revealed to be a set-up. The duo narrowly escape, and Cleon swears revenge against Virgil, forming a new gang the Warriors. A year later, Rembrandt a graffiti artist, joins the Warriors, but moments later their turf is subsequently raided by the Destroyers. Although they recruit their fellow members, their hangout is sprayed; Cleon tells Rembrandt to spray the Destroyers turf and as he is already finishing, Vermin gives Rembrandt the idea of spraying their hangout, in which he does, which enrages Virgil, who swears revenge against his rivals.

Cyrus, the Gramercy Riffs leader, the powerful gang in New York City, is planning to have a meeting to unite the gangs and control the city as one. Rembrandt takes part in a spraying competition in Soho. The Warriors win, but Scopes is thrown down the scaffolding by the Hi-Hats and trap the gangs for spraying on their turf. They escape into the lift and use bricks as weapon to knock out their leader, Chatterbox. The Warriors head into their hangout to vandalize it as revenge, avenging Scopes; the vandalism is used as a pretext for revenge by Chatterbox. The Hi-Hats return to Coney Island to invade it, as the Warriors defend their turf, Chatterbox is angry and fights them, but the Warriors kill him.

Shorty afterwards, the Destroyers return to Coney Island to raid their stores, but the Warriors disposes of them; however, they receive news from Tony that Ash has been murdered by the Destroyers and his vest is removed. The body is revealed as a bait to trap Cleon and Swan. The Destroyers desperate attempt to kill them fails and the duo narrowly escape. The latter becomes further enraged, and decides to rid the lives of Virgil and the Destroyers once and for all. Meanwhile, an increasingly paranoid Virgil sends his men to kill the Warriors, while he heads down to the shack for supplies. Arriving to the Destroyers hangout, the Warriors beat them to death, only to discover Virgil isn't in and they spot his lieutenant, L.C. Having stalked L.C and hitting him on the wall, Cleon and Vermin confront Virgil and engage in a brutal fight. They win and escape, but Virgil is killed in the building fire.

Through Cleon, Cowboy meets the Saracens leader, Edge, who is willing to secure the Warriors a place in the Riffs network, to set-up their rivals, the Jones Street Boys. Shortly afterwards, the big time finally hits Rembrandt, when he finally takes the Warriors all-city, with the help of his friend, Scopes.

On the night of the meeting, the gangs meet up in Van Courtland Park. Cyrus proposes the assembled crowd a permanent citywide truce that would allow the gangs to control the city. Most of the gangs laud his idea, but he his fatally shot by the Rogues leader, Luther; the murder contributes to the gangs enragement and after Luther frames the Warriors for the murder, Cleon is savagely beaten by the Riffs. With Cleon's fate unknown to the other Warriors, they escape and Swan takes charge of the group and decides to head to their turf. Cyrus' death sends anger and shock throughout the whole of New York City. Unbeknownst to the Warriors, the Riffs calls a hit on them on the radio DJ, while the gangs are enraged by their president's murder that they decide to rid the lives of the Warriors once and for all.

The Turnbull AC's almost run down the Warriors, but they escape onto the subway and board the train. During the ride home, the train is stopped by a fire on the tracks and they are forced to walk on foot, where they come across the Orphans, who continues to feel humiliated by the Warriors, after trashing Sully's car as retribution for lying on the radio that they beat up the Warriors. Swan makes peace with Sully and lets them walk through their turf peacefully, though, he is berated by his girlfriend, Mercy. The police arrive and attempt to arrest the Warriors, but they escape into the park. The Warriors encounter the Orphans again and the Warriors escape by throwing a molotov cocktail, blowing up the car in the process. Mercy decides to follow them, being impressed by their manliness.

The Warriors are separated again. In the 96th Street and Broadway in Manhattan, they are chased by the police. In the ensuing chase; the three Warriors escape onto a train to Union Square; Mercy escapes; Fox struggles with a police officer, falls to the tracks and he is killed by an oncoming train; Swan and the remaining three Warriors run outside, and are chased into Riverside Park by the Baseball Furies, where a fight ensues and the Warriors emerge victorious. He becomes sexually aggressive towards her; however, the women is actually revealed to be an undercover female police officer and is arrested. In the meantime at Union Square, Rembrandt, Vermin, and Cochise are being seduced by an all-female gang, the Lizzies. However, the seduction turns out to be a decoy. The Lizzies try to kill them, but they escape. In wake of this, they learn the truth everyone believes they killed Cyrus.

Swan and Mercy arrives to Union Square and reunites with the other Warriors, where a fight ensues with the Punks and the Warriors defeat them. Sometime later, the Riffs are visited by a gang member, who attended the earlier gathering and a witness to Luther firing the gun. As the Warriors journey continues, they finally arrive home to Coney Island and they discover the Rogues are waiting for them. Swan eventually decides to face Luther. Luther eventually admits to the murder, justifying "no reason I just like doing stuff like that". Swan suggests he and Luther fight one-on-one, but the cowardly Luther pulls his gun. In an act of time, Swan throws a knife into Luther's wrist, disarming him. The Riffs arrive and confront the Rogues, as they are finally unmasked as Cyrus' killer. The Riffs makes peace with the Warriors and states that they are good, "real good", while Swan states that the Warriors are "the best". The Riffs turn into fighting, executing the Rogues and a shattered Luther; The DJ announces that the big alert is called off when it turns out that the earlier reports were wrong and apologizes to the Warriors for the current situation.

In the aftermath, Swan and Mercy begin a relationship, the Warriors walk of the beach and the DJ salutes them with a song "In the City" by Joe Walsh.
